Best Baby Gates for the Top of Stairs: Safety First

Life is unpredictable. But here’s one thing that will always be certain- your kids are going to try and climb the stairs no matter what!

Kids have this weird fascination for stairs for some reason; they just can’t help themselves resist climbing.! It’s like they’re genetically preprogrammed with some intense curiosity about stairs.

But this obsession for stairs comes with consequences, as stairs are the most dangerous and injury-prone place in your house. The unattended roaming of your children near the stairs makes them highly vulnerable to accidents. Some past studies showed that stairs were among the leading causes of injury to children.

So now, installing a baby gate for stairs, especially the top one, is more important than ever before. A top of stairs baby gate can ensure the safety of your children and your peace of mind at the same time.

But with so many different models of baby gates out there today, it can be hard to pick just one. So to make this job easier for you, I’ve done hours of research and come up with my list of the best baby gate for top of stairs!

Why do you need a baby gate for top of stairs?

Why do you need a baby gate at the top of the stairs? This is one of those questions that often comes up when you have young children or you’re expecting a new arrival.

I would like to start this discussion with some research and statistics.

An NCIPC-funded research was conducted on data from the NEISS of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on stair-related injuries to young children.

According to that research, there have been an estimated 931886 children aged less than five years old who were treated for stair-related injuries within the ten-year period of 1999–2008.

That’s one child injured on stairs every 6 minutes in the United States alone!

What is scarier is, as I quote from the research -” Overall, 87.6% (816 683 of 931 886) of children fell down the stairs without mention of another object or action.”

You may argue that this is old research, but what I believe is the data are still relevant in today’s date and staircase, especially the top one, still poses the same risk.

The staggering numbers on the statistics and the quotes are self-explanatory to understand the importance of baby proofing your top stair. And what could be a better way to babyproof your top stair other than using a baby gate

A top of stairs baby gate can be really helpful in preventing accidents and injuries from happening.

Take precautions before someone gets hurt!

Toddleroo by North States Easy Swing & Lock Gate

Best Value

  • One-handed operation
  • Useful for pets too
  • Secure safety-latch design
  • Installation template is provided for precise installation
  • Safe for babies ages 6-24 months.
  • Materials: Steel metal construction.
  • Finish: Matte bronze.
  • Installation: Hardware mounted.
  • Width: 28.68 to 47.85 inches wide.
  • Height: 31 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA certified and ASTM approved.

I have picked this baby gate at the top of our list for a number of reasons.

Firstly this gate is extremely sturdy and well-built. It is built from heavy-duty metal that is kid-tough and will last long. My 18-month-old son is not a small child, and this gate can withstand his repeated attempts to push it over. I also have a 4-year-old daughter who likes to “help” her brother with everything he does. So the fact that this baby gate is practically impossible to knock down is very important to me.

When I was shopping for a baby gate for the top of my stairs, I wanted to make sure the gate has two very important features: no bottom bar and a mechanism to prevent the gate from swinging over the stairs. Luckily, this amazing baby gate offers both! It has no threshold bar in pathways, so there is absolutely no trip hazard to worry about. Also, even though the gate swings in both directions, it does have a swing control feature. Just insert the swing control pick to push out the stopper towards the stairs and the baby gate will not open over the stairs.

The gate is adjustable from 28.68 to 47.85 inches wide, so you have almost 20 extra inches of width adjustability which is more than any average baby gate. But it doesn’t stop there – it’s also taller than your standard gate, measuring 31 inches in height. This is absolutely crucial to make sure my energetic little ones can’t climb it.

I believe some people may find installing this baby gate a bit difficult. So much work is needed to be put into it. However, if you read the instructions carefully and properly use the installation template, it is not that bad.

I am not impressed with the screws supplied with the baby gate. They are not long enough to grip the wood through the drywall. So I had to use different screws, and I would recommend you to do so. I also didn’t like the fact that the hinges and latches are made of plastic material. It would have been way better if they were made of metal.

To sum it all up, this baby gate is one of the best available. It is extremely durable and has great safety features such as no bottom bar and swing control feature. Installation can be a bit tricky but once done, it does its job perfectly! The plastic hinges and latches are a bit of a downside but overall, this gate is an excellent choice for keeping your little ones safe!

I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend it to other parents who are looking for the perfect baby gate.

Munchkin Loft Hardware Mounted Baby Gate

Best Overall

  • Double-lock handle latches with a simple push
  • Door Swings Open in Both Directions.
  • One Year Limited Warranty
  • Suitable for children 6 to 24 Months.
  • Easily cleanable Using mild soap and damp cloth
  • Materials: Aluminum.
  • Finish: Silver.
  • Installation: Hardware mounted.
  • Width: 26.5 to 40 inches wide.
  • Height: 30 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: No certification.

In my view, this is probably the most stylish baby gate available on the market. It has a classic sleek silver finish, which I like a lot. But this gate is just not about looks; it’s very sturdy too. Credit goes to its aluminum construction and hardware mounting installation. Also, this baby gate features a double-locking system, so it won’t be easy for your little one to open.

Installing this baby gate can be tricky. Firstly you need to mount the wall plate into the wall, and then you have to slide the gate from the top of the wall plate to the bottom. So you are required clearance above the wall plate to install the baby gate properly. Be sure that your top of the stairs has enough clearance.

The gate has an index sizing system that can retract or extend to accommodate a variety of width openings within the pre-set index positions. This is a pretty cool feature. But the limitation of this feature is it only accommodates within the pre-set index positions. So if you have an opening that does not precisely match the pre-set index positions, then the width of the gate may become too much or too little to latch with the latch bracket.

In such a situation, the Integrated Tuning System (ITS) might become handy. You can use this feature to fine-tune and adjust the latch bracket to latch the baby gate. The Integrated Tuning System can also be used to adjust for a perfect vertical fit in case of an uneven wall.

The baby gate swings in both directions, so it’s very flexible. But it also means that the gate may swing over stairs, which can be dangerous sometimes.

The quick-release feature is another user-friendly feature of this baby gate. It allows you to remove the gate quickly when you no longer require it or need that extra space. The baby gate has a one-year limited warranty. So if anything goes wrong, Munchkin will repair or replace it!

Retract-A-Gate 52" White by Smart Retract

Best Retractable

  • One-handed operation
  • 100% USA-made.
  • Scratch-resistant fabric
  • Age Limit: 6-24 months
  • Capacity to bear impact of 200 Pounds
  • Materials: Mash Fabric.
  • Installation: Hardware mounted, (Retractable Type)
  • Width: Up to 52 inches.
  • Height: 34 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA certified and ASTM.approved.
  • Award: iParenting Media Award and Parent Tested Parent Approved Award.

You used to dedicate a section of your wall just for baby gates. Those days are over with Retract-A-Gate’s attractive and unobtrusive retractable design. This baby gate retracts fully when not in use, so it’s very space-saving.

Believe me, I understand why you may have your doubts when I bring up a retractable baby gate for the top of the stairs. But here’s why this baby gate is special – it is one of only a few that is certified by both JPMA and ASTM for such use. That means you are getting a safe and secure product that meets stringent quality standards!

Not only in the United States but around the globe too! The gate also exceeds European safety standards, making it an excellent choice for parents around the world.

it’s also 100% USA-made! This means that every part of its production has been carried out with American ingenuity, from design to manufacturing. So when you use this baby gate, you can be sure that you are supporting American-made products and jobs!

I’m the type of person who cares deeply about the environment and safety, so when I found out about this baby gate made of non-toxic reinforced polymer composite mesh fabric that is CPSC-approved, I was incredibly relieved. Knowing my babies will be safe from hazardous materials was worth investing in, and even my pets are going to stay away from danger! It’s great to see eco-friendly materials being used in an environmentally conscious way, especially when it comes to parenting.

For my specific needs, the only issue about the mesh fabric of this Retract-A-Gate is that my little dog (and any cat) can go underneath this baby gate. I was hoping for something that would offer a good enough barrier to contain my dogs along with my little one, but unfortunately this isn’t quite what I had in mind. While my pet can potentially be contained with proper training, the Retract-A-Gate might not provide a secure enough barrier. It’s a great product for what it offers, but it just doesn’t quite fit my particular needs.

When I was preparing to install my baby gates, I ran into a minor snag – the brackets were designed for horizontal placement which meant that it wouldn’t be possible to secure the both points of the bracket directly on a stud. To ensure that the gate was stable, I had to purchase and use drywall anchors, which added a little bit extra to my total cost. Thankfully, this is a simple process that doesn’t require any advanced technical knowledge or tools.

Another thing, Retract-A-Gate can be a lifesaver if you have an awkward stairway opening. This nifty retractable baby gate can be installed at any angle, indoors or outdoors, in nearly any climate. It’s no wonder that Retract-A-Gate has won so many awards!

Overall , Retract-A-Gate is a great choice for parents concerned about safety, space, and style. Its retractable design makes it perfect for stairways that require gateway access. The only potential downside I have found with this product is its inability to contain small pets. But if you’re looking for an attractive and unobtrusive gate, this is a great option. Go ahead and give Retract-A-Gate a try – you won’t be disappointed! You can rest assured that you have chosen a safe and reliable product for your beloved family. Enjoy the peace of mind knowing that your family is safe from harm wherever they go!

  • Modern and innovative crystal design.
  • Safe for installing at the top of stairs.
  • Double-action lock for extra security.
  • Can Be Mounted at An Angle
  • Materials: Acrylic, Metal.
  • Finish: Crystal..
    Installation: Hardware mounted
  • Width: 29.5 to 39.8 inches wide.
  • Height: 30.7 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA ,ASTM and European safety Standard approved.

When my wife first heard about the crystal finish baby gate made of Acrylic, I knew I had to get it for her – even if it meant spending a little extra. The beauty and quality of this novel baby gate immediately captured our attention, and ever since then, people coming over to our house simply can’t get enough of it. It’s become clear why this crystal finish design is so unique, as sleekness and charm radiate from it. People ask us where they can purchase the same product in awe of its one-of-a-kind characteristics that have exceeded our expectations. Those who see the gate quickly understand why we made such an investment – it truly is worth every penny.

But, is this gate only all about beauty? Well, not really!

The baby gate is made of high quality metal and acrylic, so there’s no doubt that it’s a sturdy piece. Not only this, the baby gate has a very safe and secure latching mechanism. It’s practically impossible for a child or pet to open! Even though we had some trouble getting it open initially but with practice and effort, we’ve gotten it to work perfectly.

That said, I must share my disappointment with the plastic made hinge. It’s definitely a slight drawback. While plastic tends to be cheaper at the onset, it can be less durable often meaning more replacements in the long run. Instead of the plastic hinge, I wish they had gone with a heavier duty material knowing this product will be used to protect our little one.

This top-of-the-line safety gate features an At-A-Glance Indicator so you can confirm that it’s locked and secure, with a bright green light indicating the gate is properly locked. And if for some reason, the gate is not properly locked, the red indicator will let you know so you can fix it right away.

This particular baby gate has an especially convenient feature: the ability to be installed at an angle. So If you ever find yourself in an awkward situation, like an uneven stairway opening, you can rest assured that this gate can be the reasonable fit for your needs. Also the included baseboard adapters are an added bonus, allowing you to perfectly install the gate over baseboards.

Even though it looks like an excellent choice with its wide range of features, installing it can be quite tricky and time consuming. Furthermore, the material that this particular baby gate is made off tends to attract dirt and dust really easily, making maintenance more difficult than with other brands. However, if you can look past these minor issues, you will be more than satisfied with this gate.

Overall, this baby gate has been a great addition to our home. We love the way it looks and how secure it is. If you’re looking for something aesthetically pleasing and modern, I would definitely recommend the Qdos crystal designer baby safety gate. It’s worth every penny spent because of its exquisite design and top-notch quality. Plus, its reliable locking system is guaranteed to keep your little ones safe and secure. However, you should be aware of the possible hassle that comes with installation and maintenance. But if you want a unique piece for your home and don’t mind these minor inconveniences, this gate may be an ideal choice for you. And if you’re anything like us, your little one will be more than thrilled with this amazing product. Enjoy!

Cardinal Gates Stairway Angle Baby Gate

Best for angled opening

  • Maximum Safety gate designed for the top of a stairway
  • It opens in both -one way & Two-way direction
  • Outdoor version available in white, black, or brown
  • Mounts at angles up to 30 degrees.
  • One-hand operated gate
  • Materials: Aluminum(lighter than steel and rustproof)
  • Finish: Powder Coated (White, Black, and Outdoor Brown)
  • Installation: Hardware mounted.
  • Width: adjustable 27 to 42.50 inches.
  • Height: 29 ½ inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA certified and ASTM approved.

The stairs of new homes are often placed in unconventional angles because builders think of the needs out of visual interest. This can make baby gates a tricky item to install safely, especially if you have an angled opening to cover. I recently had this experience when I was helping my cousin install a baby gate in her new home. Thankfully, Cardinal Gates Stairway Angle Baby Gate came to the rescue! This baby gate has a simple design that allows it to be installed at angles up to 30 degrees- it can fit into any corner or odd space that you need to use it.

The gate is adjustable to close off openings from 27″ to 42.5″, with the option to purchase extensions so you can increase the span to a maximum of 64.25″! Also, you can tell by looking at this aluminum constructed sturdy step barrier that it will stand up to anything a child might try. No cheap plastic parts to break or wear out here.

The only real downside of this baby gate is that it tests my strength when it comes to opening the latch – and I’m sure I’m not alone! It definitely takes two hands to unlatch or latch the gate – with one hand, it’s still possible, but you might have to really strain your wrist. It’s toddler-proof though, so it’s a good thing. In fact, even my two year old nephew can’t open this one, despite his impressive skills with the other gates. Also be warned that you may need earplugs as it does make quite a squeak every time you open or close it!

Overall, I would certainly recommend this baby gate for anyone who needs to secure an odd shaped opening. It’s widely adjustable and very sturdy. The only downside is that it takes two hands (or some extra strength) to open and close due its strong latch mechanism – but this also means that toddlers won’t be able to get past it! If you’re looking for a reliable baby gate with plenty of coverage options, this one should definitely be at the top of your list.

Summer Infant Deluxe Stairway Simple to Secure Wood Gate

Wood made baby gate

  • Ideal for top of stair use.
  • Precision fit template to ensure correct installation
  • Four-point installation.
  • Useful for small pets too.
  • Washable with Damp Cloth or Sponge.
  • Materials: Wood.
  • Finish: Oak, Black.
  • Installation: Hardware mounted.
  • Width: 30 to 42 inches wide.
  • Height: 32 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: No Certification

When my wife expressed her fascination with wood-made things, I knew I had to find the perfect piece for our home. After looking through my research and weighing out several options, the Deluxe Stairway Simple to Secure Wood Gate seemed like an inevitable choice. Not only did it incorporate the classic wood look she was going for, but it was also highly rated in comparison to other products. The price tag wasn’t too shabby either!
This hardware-mounted gate has a four-point installation, so it’s very secure. Also this baby gate is made from sturdy, high-quality materials. But personally I could not trust the middle brackets that connected the two parts of the baby gate which resulted in using zip ties to add extra security on top of what was already provided!

I installed this gate myself using the Precision Fit template, and it was easier than I thought it would be. The template made it easy to get the measurements right, and the official video instructions were clear and easy to follow.

One issue I faced while installing this baby gate was, the screws supplied with the baby gate were not at all good. They turned out to be archaic and of poor quality. Even with a light touch they broke. So I had to spend extra time and money running around local stores finding appropriate screws for the gate – not an ideal situation at all!

I like the fact that this baby gate swings both ways, but I can also restrict it to open in only one direction. This flexibility allows me full control when I am using this gate at the top of the stairs. Quite a handy feature. But the latch on this thing is very tricky and often takes several tries when I want to close the baby gate. Had there been a simpler way of latching, this product would be so much more helpful.

Overall, the Deluxe Stairway Simple to Secure Wood Gate was a great choice for my home. It looks beautiful, it’s secure and I can control which direction it swings open. Although there were a few hiccups, I definitely recommend this product if you are looking for an aesthetic baby gate that does its job efficiently!

Regalo 2-in-1 Stairway and Hallway Wall Mounted Baby Gate

Best for banister

  • Lightweight and Portable
  • Quick and easy to install, Easy to remove.
  • Convenient Walk-Through Design
  • Perfect for children 6-24 months, great for pets too.
  • Smooth Glide technology for easy passage
  • Materials: Steel.
  • Finish: White.
  • Installation: Hardware mounted.
  • Width: 29 to 43 inches wide.
  • Height: 30.5 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA certified and ASTM approved.

When my brother wanted to install a baby gate at the top of his stairs, he was averse to spending any additional money on installation kits or drilling holes in his banister. He wanted the process to go as smoothly and inexpensively as possible. After doing some research, I advised my brother to get the Regalo 2-in-1 Stairway and Hallway Wall Mounted Baby Gate. The package not only included the baby gate itself, but it also came with all the right tools – including a banister mount kit – for him to set up without any extra costs.

The only issue about the included installation kit is that it has only one round banister mount. That can be incredibly frustrating if you have two round banisters that need to be fitted – requiring an additional purchase of a round banister mount. On the positive side, this installation kit works well with square banisters as it generally offers all the equipment and accessories needed to install successfully

One of the things I love most about this baby gate is its very sturdy, all-metal frame. The gate is especially designed for safety at the top of the stairs. Regalo named it “ Top of Stairs Baby Gate “ for some reasons.

I won’t say installing this baby gate was easy but if you follow the instruction manual it’s not that bad. Also once installed, the gate can quickly be removed from the opening for easy storage when not in use. Just lift it out of the banister mounts and store it away until next time!

There are a few issues with the latching system of this baby gate- as far as my brother’s wife is concerned. She has mentioned how she requires squeezing the latch to open it and then she needs to lift the weight of the entire gate with just one hand – no small feat! And closing? Even more difficult. She isn’t convinced by the manufacturer’s claims that it should be a one-hand operation either – apparently experience has taught her otherwise!

To sum up, the Regalo 2-in-1 Stairway and Hallway Wall Mounted Baby Gate is a great choice for parents looking for a safe and secure baby gate to install on the top of their stairs. It comes with all the tools you need and its sturdy metal frame provides extra safety. Just keep in mind that the latching system may be difficult for some people to operate. All in all, this is a great budget-friendly product!

Summer Multi-Use Decorative Extra Tall Walk-Thru Baby Gate

  • High quality sturdy materials used.
  • Easy installation
  • Two installation options.
  • Auto close baby gate.
  • Hold open features.
  • Two way opening.
  • Materials: Metal.
    Finish: Bronze..
  • Installation: Hardware mounted, Pressure mounted.
  • Width: 28.5 to 48 inches wide.
  • Height: 36 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: No Certification

Some parents don’t feel fully secure with standard height baby gates, as their children may be particularly adept climbers. That’s why I have included Summer Multi-Use Decorative Extra Tall Walk-Thru Baby Gate in my list of top of stairs baby gate. This baby gate is one of the tallest baby gates available on the market. It stands an impressive 36″ tall, making it nearly impossible for your child to climb over.

While it was my policy to recommend only those baby gate models that have safety certification from JPMA and ASTM, summer extra tall baby gate had me reconsidering. After reading the numerous reviews from satisfied parents, I felt confident recommending this model for the top of the stairs due to its sturdy build and trustworthiness. With so many happy users already giving their approval, I know this baby gate is sure to provide peace of mind to any parent looking for a secure way to control access at the top of their stairs.

You can lock the gate with a gentle push with the auto-close feature, a great feature to have in your busy household. Also, the gate has a very convenient hold-open feature, so every time you open the gate at an angle more than 90 degree-the gate will stay open.

What sets this gate apart is it has two installation options. You can either use the included hardware kit to install it as a stair gate or use the no-drill pressure mount system with wall cups to set it up in a doorway.

Though this baby gate is a great investment for your home, there is one major downside that you need to be aware of – the bottom bar. This can create a tripping hazard if the gate is placed at the top of stairs, so it is essential to remain extra vigilant when using it in that location. In addition, the latching mechanism may be difficult to operate with just one hand while holding your little one.

Overall, Summer Multi-Use Decorative Extra Tall Walk-Thru Baby Gate is a great choice for those parents looking for an extra tall baby gate. The extra height provides additional peace of mind, while the dual installation options and convenient features make it a good investment. With proper use and care, this baby gate can be used to securely control access to the top of your stairs. Just make sure to keep an eye out for the bottom bar and latching mechanism, as they may cause some inconveniences. With that said, this baby gate remains one of my top recommendations for a secure way to keep your child away from any potential danger at the top of your stairs.

  • Height: 30 inches high.

I am guessing that you have some unique staircase configurations! One-of-a-kind staircase that’s nearly impossible to babyproof.
Maybe you only have one flat surface to work with but no wall or post on the other side. Even your staircase may not have any real anchor point on either side.

The solution? North State’s deluxe décor model.
In general, the gate can accommodate opening up to 72 inches wide. But an additional 15-inch extension bar is available to make the gate even wider. It is possible to use six pieces of extension bar, so overall the width of the gate can be extended up to 162 inches.
Now for the above-mentioned scenario where there are no anchor points to attach the baby gate on the top of stairs, you may use this 162 inches massively wide gate from one wall to another.
Since you are extending the gate to be used at the top of the stairs, special consideration should be taken, like checking all fasteners regularly, not allowing the gate to swing over stairs, etc.
Toddleroo offers easy one-hand operation with its childproof double-locking latch system. So it’s very secure and flexible at the same time. It also includes a stay-open feature to keep doors open when you need them to stay open in a busy household.
No matter what style you have, the timeless, classic matte bronze finish will be a great match for it. This sturdy steel construction ensures durability and longevity, so you never have to worry about replacing it again anytime soon either!

  • Width: 24.75 to 42.50 inches wide.
  • Height: 30.5 inches high.
  • Safety Certification: JPMA certified, Meets and Exceeds Federal (CPSC) Standards

Before I had children, I remember thinking that a baby gate was simply a baby gate – how wrong I was! When it came time to purchase one for my top-of-stairs baby gate in my previous home, I quickly encountered the challenge of having an extremely narrow staircase set-up. It seemed like no matter what I looked at, it was either too wide or had too many bells and whistles. My stress levels were on high—that is until I found the KidCo G2001 Safeway Top Of Stairs Quick Release Baby Gate! This baby gate provided me with exactly what I needed: something that fit a tight opening as smalls as 24.75 inches while still being sturdy and secure.

One of the best features of the Kidco baby gate is that you don’t need both hands to open it! With its easy-release lever, you can make your way in and out with one hand – an absolute game-changer for multitasking parents. And when you don’t need it anymore, no problem – just remove it with quick-release hardware. It really is designed to make parenting life easier!

The KidCo Baby Gate has the other usual features for a top-of-stairs baby gate, like a directional stop feature that prevents the gate from swinging over the stairs . It also offers something absolutely necessary for a top of stairs baby gate : no threshold bar! That means easy access with no trips or bumps as you open and close.

This baby gate meets CPSC guidelines and is JPMA certified too. In addition, it uses certified non-toxic powder coat paint that is safe for the environment and for babies.

The thing that I did not like about the Kidco baby gate was its plastic latch. I imagine as a parent, you’re always looking for the best in terms of your baby’s safety, but this plastic latch just doesn’t do the cut for me. In addition to that, the gate makes an audible sound when opened – something I found to be quite disturbing.

Overall, I think the Kidco G2001 Safeway Top of Stairs Quick Release Baby Gate is a great option for those who need a top-of-stairs gate with a narrow opening. With its sturdy construction and easy-release lever, it’s perfect for multitasking parents. The only downside to this baby gate is the plastic latch and the audible sound when opened. But if those are not an issue for you, then this is a great option to choose!

The gate slides open easily as desired, which allows it to accommodate openings 29-42 inches wide, so it can literally go anywhere on any average staircase. The 30-inch height barrier is also too high for little ones to climb over.

It’s incredibly easy to install with the bracket-based hardware mounts – mounting takes minutes! That’s not all; you can install it using nothing but a screwdriver and an electric drill!

The gate opens in both directions for extra convenience in high-traffic areas. But remember, this feature can be risky as it allows the gate to swing over stare.

What Type Of Gate Should You Choose As Top Of Stairs Baby Gate

You have already known that the top stairs are one of the most dangerous places for your child. So selecting the right type of gate is absolutely critical to their safety and well-being!

In this section of the blog post, I will be discussing which type of baby gate is best for the top of the stairs. Once again, I would like to start the discussion with some statistics-

In this study, it was estimated that 37,673 children had been treated in emergency departments for injuries associated with baby gates. That averages out to about 1794 cases a year!

While the researcher recommended, as I quote- “greater efforts are needed to promote proper usage, ensure safety in product design, and increase awareness of age-related recommendations for use of gates.”

What I have come to understand is that using just any other baby gate may not be enough. You need thoughtful consideration when choosing which gate will work best at our top stairs.

So what’s important now more than ever before may be choosing wisely between two types- Hardware Mounted & Pressure mounted.

I strictly recommend using a hardware-mounted baby gate for top of stairs because the installation process involves attaching the gate with the surface using screws. Which essentially makes hardware-mounted gates a more secure and permanent option.

Pressure-mounted gates are just what they sound like -a gate mounted using pressure between two walls. Unfortunately, pressure-mounted gates won’t do any good for the top of the stairs because they’re just held by applying pressure between two walls and have no real grip on anything besides themselves – which makes them easy targets!

They’re easy prey and prone to getting pushed over or pulled down by an eager toddler who wants nothing more than some playtime on their new toy downstairs!

So, to sum up, for the top of the stairs, go all out with a hardware-mounted baby gate while an absolutely “No” to pressure mounting option.

Things to Consider Before Buying The Best baby Gate For Top Of Stairs

As you begin your search for the best baby gate for top of stairs on the market, there are many things to consider. These factors should not be taken lightly as they could shape your decision on which top of stairs baby gate you will buy.

Some of these factors are internal, like the type of staircase you have, the width of your stairs, or even your sense of aesthetics. There are also some external factors like safety certification and different safety features of the baby gate in question. All these factors should be taken into consideration before buying a baby gate for top stairs.

In the next section of this blog post, I will be talking about these factors to make your purchasing decision easy. Keep reading.

Durable Material:

A baby gate should be made of durable materials that can stand up to even the roughest abuse from your young children.

Some baby gates are made of metal, whereas others are made of wood. Like most things, each material has its pros and cons.

For example, some parents prefer metal because it is more durable over time, but others prefer wood because it is classic. Therefore, it’s essential to consider the pros and cons of each material before purchasing a baby gate for your stairs.

Auto-lock:

Some baby gates come equipped with auto-lock features that can be a great safety measure for your child. The gate will automatically lock itself with this feature once the door is closed with a little push. So you don’t have to go through a two-step locking process every time you want to lock the gate.

Child Proof Locking Mechanism:

It’s crucial to find the right balance when purchasing a baby gate. The locking mechanism needs to be very difficult, if not impossible, for kids but easy enough that parents can open or close it with ease.

Visual Indicator:

Some baby gates have a visual indicator to verify that the door has been securely locked and properly installed. This is an excellent feature because you can quickly check if your gate is working correctly or requires some minor adjustments.

Price:

It’s essential to consider the price of your baby gate for top of stairs. You don’t want to spend a fortune, but you also don’t want to buy something too cheap that will break after only a few months. In the end, you want to consider your budget and balance it with quality.

Type of Staircase:

You should remember that all homes are not the same. Whether your stairs are straight or curved or even spiral is going to play a role in the type of baby gate you should buy.

For a straight staircase, any average baby gate will be ok. But if you have a curved staircase or even a spiral one, then you will probably need an angle baby.

So, always consider the type of staircase that you own before purchasing a baby gate.

Smooth Finish:

You want a baby gate that has a smooth finish so your child can’t get caught on any rough or sharp edges.

The Width of Your Stairs:

It’s important to remember that all stairs are not the same. The width of a stair is going to be different from one staircase to another.

If you have wider or narrower stairs, this may impact how wide a baby gate you should get for your home. Buying a gate that is too big or too small will be a waste of your money. You need to get the right size gate that perfectly feat your opening!

Gates for Pets:

Some baby gates can also be used as a pet gate to keep your cats or dogs from entering an area where they shouldn’t go. If you have your own animals, make sure that the gate you choose will work for both child and animal safety!

Install:

It’s important to consider how easy it will be for you to install your baby gate. Will you need any tools or accessories? How complicated is the setup process? These are questions you want to ask yourself before purchasing a gate, so make sure that installation is not going to be an issue.

Things to Consider Before Buying Baby Gate for Top Stairs

Meeting The Industry Standards For Safety:

It’s crucial to purchase a baby gate that has been tested and approved by an independent third party. This is a critical feature to have in any baby gate!

You should always make sure that the baby gate you choose is American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards-compliant and Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) certified.

The ASTM creates standards, while the JPMA confirms compliance with these standards and gives certificates. These approvals will ensure that your baby gate is safe for your child.

Gate Height:

It’s essential to ensure that the baby gate you choose is tall enough for your stairs. One common problem when choosing a baby gate is buying something too short.

Your child may be able to climb over it easily, which could lead to injury. A general rule of thumb could be the height of the has to be at least three-quarters of your child’s height.

Gate design:

Before buying the baby gate, you should consider the design of your baby gate. Of course, you want it to be aesthetically pleasing and not an eyesore in your home.

But you also want to look for a product that will stand up well over time and won’t get damaged easily, regardless of where you place it or how much you use it.

No Threshold Bar:

The Threshold bar at the bottom of a baby gate can be a severe safety hazard, especially for the top of stairs. So, to avoid the risk of tripping hazards, look to buy baby gates without a Threshold bar.

One Way Opening:

Often baby gates are designed with two-way openings, which is very convenient if you want to use the gate for the doorway. But for the top of the stairs, two-way openings could be dangerous as it allows the baby gate to swing over the stairs.

So to make things more secure, the baby gate should have some mechanism to restrict the door to a one-way opening hence stopping the gate from swinging over stairs.

Additional features:

Some baby gates come with additional features that will help improve safety and convenience. For example, some staircase gates will have an auto-close function to increase safety and save time.

Some gates come with special latch side hardware to accommodate various angles of your staircase. If you have a unique staircase shape, then this feature can be beneficial.

Warranty:

It’s important to consider whether the baby gate you purchase comes with a warranty or not. In the unfortunate event where your baby gate is defective or breaks down within a certain period of time, a warranty ensures that the company will stand behind their product and replace it or fix it for you. This reduces your stress and ensures that you are actually receiving a quality product.

Customer Review:

Lastly, you should always check customer reviews before purchasing a baby gate for your stairs. Reviews can give you valuable insight into what people think about the product, how it works, its benefits and any drawbacks they may have experienced.

If possible, go through the reviews on Amazon or other online retailers to get a better idea of how well it works in real life situations.
